The Sufi's Legacy and Timur's Reverence

Sheikh Burhaneddin Klych Sagardzhi was an eminent Sufi mystic and spiritual teacher of the 14th century. Preaching Islam, he spent many years in the lands of the East, reaching as far as the courts of Chinese rulers, where he commanded great authority. Before his death, the sheikh bequeathed that he be buried in Samarkand.

Upon learning of the mentor's demise, Amir Timur ordered his body to be brought to Samarkand and raised a majestic mausoleum over the grave. The commander held such deep reverence for the saint that, according to historical accounts, while riding along the main street past Rukhabad, he would always dismount from his horse and walk that stretch on foot.

Architectural Austerity and Asceticism

Structure: The building belongs to the portal-dome centric type. The lower cubic volume (the tetragon) organically transitions into an arched octagon, crowned by a slender conical dome.

Decor: Unlike the glaze-glittering facades of Gur-Emir or Shakhi-Zinda, Rukhabad is emphatically austere and modest. Its outer walls are laid with textured burnt terracotta brick without polychrome majolica, reflecting the ideals of Sufi self-restraint and humility.

Interior: The inner hall is plastered with white alabaster (ganch) with stepped stalactite pendentives in the corners of the under-dome space.

Sacred Relic and the Ensemble

Casket with the Prophet's Hair: An ancient legend holds that beneath the dome or in the wall of the burial vault, a silver box with seven hairs from the beard of the Prophet Muhammad, belonging to Sheikh Sagardzhi, was walled up.

The 19th-Century Complex: In the 19th century, a cozy ensemble formed around the mausoleum: a summer neighborhood mosque with a carved and painted ayvan was added, along with a madrasah, a brick minaret, and a hauz (pond) was dug in the shade of centuries-old trees. A paved alley directly connects Rukhabad with the Gur-Emir burial vault.
