Museum of the History of Romitan District

The museum works in Romitan, one of the oldest towns of the Bukhara oasis, some 25 kilometres north-west of Bukhara, and belongs to the Bukhara State Museum-Reserve.

The display runs from antiquity to modern times, with archaeology forming a large share of it: finds that trace the history of the oasis and its cultural mix.

The most valuable material relates to the Varakhsha palace, one of the region's principal early medieval monuments. Carved terracotta reliefs of the seventh and eighth centuries are shown here along with twelfth-century pottery, and both make plain the level local craftsmen worked at.

The ethnographic section is strong too: traditional silk and half-silk clothing, household utensils and silver jewellery of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries — the daily life, taste and craft of the district.

The museum runs cultural events and education programmes, and it makes a logical stop on the way to the Varakhsha site.
