Landscape and natural features

Terrain and elevations: The Mirankul Mountains are spurs of the Zarafshan range, with elevations from 700 to 1,500–1,700 metres above sea level. The gorge is formed by rocky ridges of granite and limestone, interspersed with soft hills and broad green terraces.

Water resources: Along the bottom of the gorge flows the Mirankulsay River, fed by karst springs and melting snows. In spring and early summer the riverbed is full, forming small cascades, pools and seasonal waterfalls.

Microclimate: In summer a mountain breeze blows here, and the air temperature stays 6–8 °C lower than in the city, which attracts residents of the region escaping the summer heat.

Flora and fauna

Vegetation: In the valley and on the slopes grow walnut, wild almond, pistachio, wild rose, hawthorn and thickets of mountain juniper. In spring (from late March to May) the hills are covered with a solid carpet of wild tulips, irises, scarlet poppies and eremurus. In the gorge people gather mountain medicinal herbs: thyme, oregano, St John's wort and mint.

Wildlife: The rocks are nesting grounds for chukar partridges and birds of prey (hawks, saker falcons, golden eagles). Among mammals there are mountain foxes, badgers, hares and steppe hedgehogs.

Leisure, tourism and activities

Hiking and trekking: The gorge has accessible trails for a one-day hike without special mountaineering training. From the upper points of the ridge a circular panoramic view opens up: in clear weather Samarkand and the mirror of nearby reservoirs can be seen.

Picnics and family holidays: Along the river there are traditional recreation areas with topchans under canopies and chinar trees, and oshkhonas where shashlik and national dishes are prepared.

Paragliding: Thanks to the constant rising thermal currents on the open slopes of Mirankul, Samarkand paragliders train here.

Horse riding: Local residents offer horse routes along gentle trails through the gorge and foothills.
